A couple of months ago, I discovered that Rachel, @_babblebooks on twitter, was doing a readathon based on her twitter chat, SundayYA called the SundayYAthon. I have done readathons in the past so when I saw this was happening, I knew I had to join in. The readathon lasted from Thursday the 25th to Sunday the 28th, the aim being to read as much as possible. I had a lot of fun during the readathon because although normally readathons can be quite isolating but there was a DM group for everyone who was in the readathon and it was nice to see what everyone was doing and reading over the time period.
So what did I read? I managed to finish 3 books over 4 days and for someone who has just come out of a reading slump is pretty good. So the books I read were...
Book 1: Paper Butterflies by Lisa Heathfield
This book was getting a lot of hype before it's release and now that it is out. Before the readathon, it was the #YATakeover where there was a book club for Paper Butterflies. It was here that this book sounded super interesting to me and I knew that I had to read it, flash forward to the readathon and I read it. Paper Butterflies was an intense read focusing on the subject of child abuse something that I have never seen in a book before. It was because of this you immediate feel connected to June and her character as she goes through pain, and as the reader I just wanted this to stop. The nature of the book meant that I just had to find out what happens next, finishing it the morning of Thursday. The book also had many twists and it a heartbreaking book but one that everyone should read.
Book 2: The Return of the Young Prince by A.G. Roemmers
This was my most disappointing read of the whole readathon. Having enjoyed The Little Prince earlier in the year, I was kind of excited to read this one but it was just not good... It felt like it was trying too hard to be what the previous book had been and lots of it felt like an advice book compared to a work of fiction. I have written a review of this book which will be out later this week...
Book 3: Disruption by Jessica Shrivington
This was kind of a last-minute addition to the readathon TBR but it was good that I read this book because I really enjoyed it. Although I like the science fiction genre I don't tend to read much of it and this was therefore quite a different book for me. I really enjoyed the concept of the story however you could argue that it is mainly a dystopian rather than a sci-fi. I also enjoyed the relationships between the characters and I liked seeing how they evolved throughout the story. The hero, Maggie was also more of a vigilante which is something you don't often see with YA fiction. Due to this being a duology, I really want the last book.
So those are the three books that I read. Have you taken part in a readathon before? Did you take part in the #SundayYAthon? If so, what did you read? Leave them in the comments below.
See you soon,
Amy
